I grew up in Miami but was never able to learn Spanish. I studied Fluenz Spanish 1-5 taking about three years. Then I went to Panama study Spanish at a school in the mountains for two weeks. I was already conversational and it took me three days to realize my teacher didn't speak English but I communicated with her fine thanks to Fluenz. I can now communicate with my in-laws in Mexico. I am now finishing the first disk of French. What really helps me are the flashcards as was the case with Spanish. I studied a lesson every Saturday and then the flashcards every night until the next Saturday when I moved to the next lesson. The french/spanish spoken on the flashcards really helps. I also like that they keep track of the ones you got wrong and you can try them again until you get them all correct. I spend less time each night studying as I get better. Once you get to Level 3, there are some very inexpensive Skype Spanish Tutors that are fun to practice with (e.g. $14 an hour two years ago). I swear by Fluenz and wish you the best of luck!
