It takes a lot of time and practice to get all these little details of a spoken conversation, especially when one is just starting to learn a language, so it's super normal to get confused, especially with such similar words.
Don't hesitate to play the phrase over and over again until you grasp the difference, and use the audio components and the podcasts as much as you can to help with oral understanding, you'll see that little by little things become clearer and clearer!

Something similar happens with dieser/diese and einer/eine. Depending on the word immediately following either of those, it can be difficult to determine if the speaker is saying -e or -er. In these cases, I usually rely on the gender of the word to determine which one is being used.
