Hi Mark, this is explained in level 4, session 25: "hambre" is actually a feminine noun, but it works like "agua". So we use the masculine article to make pronunciation easier ("el agua", "el hambre"), but the feminine form of adjectives ("poca agua", "mucha hambre"). Hope this is clearer now!
