Because the contraction of "le" before a muted h is l' (l'hôtel, l'hôpital) so then you have to contract "au l'" to "à l'". See https://www.thoughtco.com/how-to-use-... for a good explanation. It's not as complicated as i make it sound!

Hi Kiernon, here's a little summary for help:
- À + LE = AU (before masc noun starting with any consonant but H it gets contracted)
- À + L' = À L' (before nouns starting with vowels or H it doesn't change)
- À + LA = À LA (before fem nouns it doesn't change)
- À + LES = AUX (before plural nouns it gets contracted)
