depends on the region of the world that the spanish speaker is from. It is basically an accent like how coffee is pronounced in California as compared to Boston or someone from the Bronx

I finished Fluenz about 18 months ago, and that exact issue drove me crazy the entire time. I learned post-Fluenz that it's due to what mshideler answered. For me, it came down to picking one and sticking with it. What I hear around me the most in Austin TX is "ay-ya" so that's what I chose. You may find a few other pronunciation differences in Fluenz, but it's good to be exposed to those differences because you will absolutely hear them when you speak with others. Stick with it - Fluenz provides an awesome foundation!
