I think the simple answer to why it is not as you suggest it should be, is that it simply is not that way, rather it is as taught. You are trying to translate from English word for word, and that very often simply does not work. These are idioms. If you think about it, English has more of these kind of illogical structures than any language. In fact the English phrase "to go shopping" really doesn't make sense. Do we "go eating?" On the news last night, they mentioned a person who "went missing." Huh? In English, we say "on vacation" but "at work." Why?
