1. I forget when this is first introduced, but the rule is you use au (or aux) for masculine countries, en for feminine.
2. In level 1, I think we always used the est-ce que with questions, later we learned it is often optional, i.e., you can express a question by the inflection in your voice. However in level two, you would have to use it for questions asking "what." But in the example you gave, the program should accept either way, with our without est-ce que.
