I think we are in similar knowledge levels.
The way I see it, we have different types of pronouns: subject and object.
I look at il and elle as subject pronouns.
Example 1: Le magasin ouvre a huit heure et demie (The store opens at 830)
Example 2: Il ouvre a huit heur a demie (It opens at 830. I am implying that the "it" refers to the store, and we have to use "il" because store is masculine)
However, I see le/la/les as object pronouns
Example 3: Je veux fermer la porte ( I want to close the door)
Example 4: Je veux la fermer (I want to close it. I'm implying that "it" refers to the door, and we use "la" because door is feminine. Also we have to place this object pronoun before the last verb).
Example 5: Elle aime lire les livres (She likes to read the books)
Example 6: Elle aime les lire (She likes to read them, implying that "them" refers to the books)

I should have waited to post this question as the answer to this is given in the lesson 23 tutorial. Il & Elle are used for subjects & Le or La are used for objects. thanks Joseph.
