Avere is used because the verb being conjugated is préfère, not andare.

Sorry that preferire was spelled like the French word, I posted this before I noticed that my iPad had "corrected" my spelling!

thank you for the response. Still a bit confused however, take the following expressions:
1.) (She) had to go > E' dovuta andare
If
2.) I preferred to go > Ho preferito andare is correct than why don't you say: Ha dovuta andare ?
I assumed from the tutorial that if the infinitive verb used essere.... then you had to use essere.

The rule you reference applies to modal verbs; volere, dovere, and potere.
If a modal verb is followed by an infinitive that takes essere, then the modal verb is conjugated with essere and it must agree in gender and number with the subject.
Preferire is not a modal verb so it takes avere.
