It's all about formality and a little on how it "rolls off the tongue." But you would not be incorrect to use either form. What certainly helps in terms of communicating is that if you are starting out and your accent is thick and perhaps you stumble a little when speaking, by using "est-ce que" you are giving the listener a clue that you are trying to ask a question, so it helps with comprehension. Keep at it!
