This one is a bit tricky. The duration applies to the action, so "trabajar por ocho horas" means that you're going to work during 8 hours. But if you were to apply this to "reservar", it would mean that you were going to make a reservation during 5 nights (i.e. it will take you 5 nights to make the reservation). Obviously that's incorrect and not a duration in this case, so you use para.

Thanks for the response. That helps a lot. I now see that the duration is only part of the picture and that the rest of the sentence has to be considered.

I'm still staring at this sentence trying to figure out the contexts in which "por" would be used to indicate duration. I too was confused and came here looking for answers, because in Rocket Spanish, another program I use, they definitely used "por." But the sentences didn't include "reservar," they were more along the lines of "¿por cuántas noches?" etc.
I get the response but also feel like I don't GET it and would continue to use "por" incorrectly.
