ahh in that section you will often hear things you haven't learned yet (or won't even learn ever, like "zhi"). The goal is to find the word that you know in a sentence that you may not fully understand. It helps you practice your ear for mandarin. I can hear the "san ben shu", and the goal is to hear "shu". Liang zhi bi, same, you have to hear "liang".

Ok that is not at all helpful for me. I will start to skip that section as I don't think one word can be taken out of context when learning a language. Individual words can have very different meanings depending on context and situation. I won't learn anything from this method.

I disagree with you. The goal is to find the word you know so that even if you miss most of the rest of the sentence you have some idea of what the whole thing is about. It might not be working for you but it worked for me. It's not taking the word out of context, it's taking the word in other contexts, and you will be "oh I know what "shu" is!, they're talking about books!"

Context is about recognizing a word or understanding its meaning based on understanding how it is being used in a sentence. It can even give the meaning of an unknown word. Since I can't understand any of the sentence, It makes it impossible to use context to truly make the word easier to understand. It doesn't really matter. I am learning from the rest of the program.
