The general rule is to use estar for location. However, when you are talking about where an event takes place, you use ser. This is an exception to the general rule, and you just have to memorize it.

Thanks for clarifying this question for me too. I am just working on lesson 2.8 and was totally confused by the same issue. Perhaps on the next upgrade this can be explained better. Before I checked the commons, I was looking through all my old notes thinking I must have misunderstood something.

Yeah. Ser is for a place you came from like your homeland, and esta is for places you have gone to. Events go to ser as well.
Place you go to {ex. restaurante} = esta
Living place or event {ex. mexico or meeting} = ser

Ashoka, that information does not make much sense, and "Estar" is the word, not "esta."
